Local Organist, back from African Teaching Tour, Slated for Recital

Richard C. Ewert will present an organ recital at Elm Grove Ev. Lutheran Church, 945 N. Terrace Drive in Elm Grove, on Friday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Ewert, a resident of Brookfield, is a lifelong member of Elm Grove Lutheran and began playing the organ there as a child. He earned the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Applied Music – Organ Performance from Carroll College in Waukesha in 1982. During his college years he played for a number of Master Classes at the University of Wisconsin and Regional Conventions of the American Guild of Organists (AGO). He has been a member of the Milwaukee Chapter of the AGO since 1976.  He is noted throughout this region for his hymn improvisation and sensitive tonal interpretation of the church’s song. He first performed the upcoming recital in the Chapel of Christ Triumphant at Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) in June of this year in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Church Music from CUW.

The recital on Elm Grove Lutheran’s digitally expanded Casavant Frères organ will feature music of the classic organ repertoire ranging from baroque composers Bach and Buxtehude, nineteenth century artists Mendelssohn and Reger, twentieth century French masters Messiaen  and Duruflé, together with three organ preludes in the jazz idiom by contemporary composer Johannes Matthias Michel.

Mr. Ewert recently returned from several weeks in Kenya, where he visited churches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya giving recitals and teaching African organ students.  All area residents are encouraged to enjoy an evening of fine organ music September 23.  Refreshments will be served during a reception to be held immediately after the recital.
